ENERGY SOVEREIGNTY CAMPAIGN FOR THE FINLAY VACCINE INSTITUTE
GEOBPRO Group & espacioDespacio consortium in the Netherlands organized the campaign “ENERGY SOVEREIGNTY FOR THE FINLAY INSTITUTE OF VACCINES” in support of the international cooperation project initiated by the Spanish development cooperation organization SODePAZ (www.sodepaz.org) co-financed by the Spanish cooperation agency AECID and the Andalusian Agency for International Cooperation – AACID.
Together with the group of European organizations in solidarity with Cuba, we call on all natural and legal persons, financial and non-financial entities that are sensitive to the emergency that the people of Cuba are currently experiencing in the face of a disaster that has profoundly depleted the country's energy reserves, which were already limited, and now more than ever needs international support to restore energy in key sectors such as public health.
In this campaign we focus on the Finlay Institute of Vaccines IFV, for the important contribution made by this research center with proven effectiveness and relevance for Cuba as well as for other countries in the world.
WHAT IS THE FINLAY INSTITUTE OF VACCINATION (IFV)?
The Finlay Vaccine Institute (IFV), is a scientific organization created in honour of Dr. Carlos Juan Finlay, a renowned Cuban epidemiologist. This institute have created the meningitis vaccine, also a conjugate vaccine against influenza type B, it is a world vanguard of the biotechnological and medical-pharmaceutical industry. It is a scientific and technological entity at the service of public health that researches and produces vaccines for the Advanced Vaccines Program and helps other impoverished countries that cannot access vaccines due to the high prices imposed by pharmaceutical companies.
It is an entity that has high capacities, develops complex technological processes and works jointly with other scientific institutions and has highly qualified researchers. Cuba made possible the creation and production of the “SOBERANA 01” vaccines; “SOBERANA 02” and “SOBERANA PLUS”: the first Cuban and Latin American vaccines against SARS-Cov-2 Virus, with high effectiveness.
The vaccines produced by the IFV guarantee the vaccination of the Cuban population and are distributed in multiple countries in Latin America, Africa and Asia, being one of the lines of action of the South-South cooperation carried out by the Antillean country.
In addition to COVID vaccines, the Finlay Vaccine Institute has created and produced:
- Meningococcal BC vaccine, for active immunization against meningococcal disease caused by serogroups B and C.
- Meningococcal polysaccharide A and C vaccine, for active immunization against meningococcal disease caused by serogroups A and C, in adults, boys and girls from two years of age.
- Tetanus vaccine, for the prevention of tetanus in all ages.
- Vi polysaccharide typhoid vaccine, which prevents typhoid fever in adults and children over 2 years of age.
- Diphtheria-tetanus-pertussis vaccine, indicated for the prevention of tetanus, diphtheria and pertussis in infants, boys and girls.
- Diphtheria-tetanus vaccine, indicated for the prevention of tetanus and diphtheria in adults, adolescents, boys and girls from 7 years of age.
THE NECESSARY ENERGY...
The processes of design, manufacture, conservation and distribution are large consumers of energy. The annual consumption of the IFV amounts to 9,500 MW/h-year of electrical energy, which represents an average annual expenditure of foreign currency of $1,355,333.00, aggravating the consequences of the criminal and illegal blockade imposed by the US, which makes it more expensive and makes it difficult to access the energy and inputs needed in the IFV's technological processes.
SOLAR ENERGY TO MANUFACTURE VACCINES...
Achieving energy self-sufficiency becomes a guarantee for the sustainability of the IFV is a guarantee for the development of cooperation between Cuba and the countries of Africa, Asia and Latin America on health and the defence of the human life.
The Spanish organization for development cooperation SODEPAZ "Solidarity for development and peace" with many years of experience in cooperation with Cuba and its counterpart CUBASOLAR, has developed a project valued at 3 million euros, aimed at ensuring the energy self-sufficiency of the IFV through the photovoltaic electrification of its facilities, to be developed in 3 years.
